.......................................Anatomy For Dancers Workshop........................................

Stay tuned for details coming soon about upcoming Anatomy for Dancers Workshops...below is info about a recent workshop.

Embodied Alchemy Part 2: The Spine and Torso

You know how to move your ribs, hips, and spine in circles, undulations, and locks. You feel connected to your body and to your spirit as you dance. Now you can learn how to tap into even more layers of sensing and knowing within you.

Learning about anatomy can give you both greater access to technique and a deeper connection to presence and artistic expression -- regardless of your dance style or skill level. It can help you more fully integrate and empower your body, mind, and spirit.

As bellydancers, the spine and torso are central to our dance form. They are our center axis, our strong and supple core, through which we extend our truest expression and deepen our fullest awareness. The spine and torso are also key to our posture, vital systems (breathing, digestion, circulation), and our movement whether in dance or everyday tasks.

This workshop will focus on the form and function of the bones and muscles of the spine and torso, as well as other relevant body systems such as organs, fluids, and breathing. A combination of clear and precise information (diagrams and notes) with somatic exercises (feeling the body through movement) will give you a great range of tools to deepen your body awareness and your dance.

Sarah Johansson Locke is a certified teacher of embodied anatomy and yoga as well as a bellydance teacher and performer. She incorporates her studies in Body-Mind Centering, the Alexander Technique, yoga, physical theater, and dance into her anatomy workshops, which have been enjoyed across the country for the past three years. Past students have said:

"Just a quick note of thanks for your amazing workshop this weekend. I took Anatomy For Dancers on Saturday, and honestly, I could have stayed there all week. It was a profound experience. You are a teacher and artist of great integrity and clarity."

"Thank you for sharing your art with us... I am so glad I was here to receive your message! You totally blew my mind!"

"These kinds of workshops are life-changing for any dancer. I believe that your work can teach us how to understand better any dance technique. Also, I can learn how to copycat a dancer I admire through studying technique, however, I am more interested in getting to know my own body, my own possibilities, my own boundaries, etc. - which is what your workshops explore. Thank you so much for sharing with us all your knowledge, Sarah!"

"Sarah was an invaluable addition to the Acupuncture during Labor and Delivery Advanced training. She offered students a clear and detailed picture of the relevant anatomy....and then led a movement class that allowed them to develop their own physical connection with where the structures were and how they could function to invite more freedom and space into a difficult labor. It was a great pleasure to watch their faces as new insights appeared."

Costuming History and Ideas - learn about the traditional costuming and jewelry of the countries that influence Tribal bellydance, as well as recent Tribal and Fusion innovations

Basic Bellydance Percussion Rhythms and Finger Cymbal Playing - by learning and playing the basic rhythms that form most bellydance music, you can appreciate the music even more, and dance with it better as a result

Moving from the Center - combining Sarah's experience in bellydance, pilates, yoga, and physical theater, this workshop focuses on centering, developing body awareness, and other techniques that can be used by anyone to feel more grounded and in control of their actions and intentions, as well as by performers to enhance their skills in any discipline

Embodied Dance - for dancers interested in exploring movement from the inside out. Learn how to access your deep dancing body through the principles of yoga, Body-Mind Centering, kinesthetic anatomy, and dance traditions from butoh to bellydance. We will study basic anatomy, practice yoga that balances alignment and flow, and explore free movement and visualization exercises. Discover the freedom and creativity of full body awareness through movement and breath.

The Vinyasa of Tribal Bellydance - learn how to apply principles of yoga asana practice to another kind of vinyasa. Tribal bellydance is a contemporary global dance form inspired by ancient women’s dances and the travels of the Roma (Gypsies) through countries including India, Turkey, Morocco, and Spain. We will start with a yoga asana series and then explore bellydance movements and isolations. Discover how the ancient traditions of yoga and bellydance combine to celebrate the body as sacred.

Anatomy for Dancers - learn about the form and function of the body as it relates to posture, technique, and movement. We'll get to know the muscular and skeletal systems, as well as the organs, fluids, ligaments, nervous system, and endocrine system that make our bodies the complex and beautiful environments they are.
