Alchemy is thrilled to join The Underscore Orkestra's "Revel Me" project and the incomparable Mira Betz for an extravaganza of Balkan/Gypsy/Klezmer/Swing music and dance. Mira just taught another profound and inspiring workshop here last weekend, and she'll be returning to NYC to celebrate with us before she heads back the Bay Area. Sarah will be getting back to her dance roots by performing with artists from the vibrant Portland, Oregon community, where she first started studying and performing tribal bellydance in the mid 1990s. She's looking forward to sharing the fun with some of the members of Alchemy Dance Theater and Alchemy Tribal Collective, and with you all. Come join us!

The multi-faceted career of Mira Betz is a testament to her passionate artistry and desire for continual growth. She trained extensively in Middle Eastern folk styles with Katarina Burda for over 10 years, lived and studied in Morocco and has been active in theater, dance and the performing arts for 25 years. Nominated for "Instructor of the Year" by Zaghareet Magazine in 2006, Mira has become a sought-after dancer, choreographer, costumer, and instructor world-wide. Revel Me is a collaboration between musicians from The Underscore Orkestra and dancers Bevin Victoria from the Gemini Project and Danielle Smith of the Znama dance company. Influenced by sounds and movement from the Balkans, the Middle East, and Spain, as well as American and Gypsy Jazz, Blues, Swing and Klezmer, the artists craft a seamless show of syncopated rhythmic compositions and contemporary performance vignettes. The Underscore Orkestra has toured all over the USA, Europe, Canada and Central America for the past 6+ years and is based out of Portland, Oregon.

Alchemy Performance projects
Sarah Johansson Locke performs solo work, collaborates with artists in all disciplines, and is the Director of Alchemy Dance Theater and the Alchemy Tribal Collective. She is also a facilitator of PURE and a founding member of Adelantre.

Alchemy Dance Theater creates a moving collage across cultures, from the ancient to the modern. Their energetic and sinuous style samples from the traditional dances of countries from India to Morocco to Spain and mixes them with elements of contemporary dance from butoh to hip hop. They are inspired by a diverse range of sources, from the traditional dances of the Roma (Gypsies) who live in countries including India, Turkey, and Spain...to the mothers of modern dance, Ruth St. Denis and Isadora Duncan, who pioneered American dance as spiritual and personal expression...to the creativity of a wide range of contemporary dance, theater, new circus, and music innovators...and beyond. A mixture of intricate choreography and dynamic improvisation, the dances can range from upbeat, energetic, and celebratory to graceful, mysterious, and mesmerizing. When danced in a group, the mixture of choreography and improvisation creates dynamic connections among the dancers, highlighting both the individuality of each dancer and the collective energy of the group. Ornate and colorful costumes and engaging music that ranges from unstoppable beats to transporting melodies are other elements that help to create these inspiring performances. Sarah and Alchemy Dance Theater are available to perform at public and private events and celebrations, along with appearances at nightclubs and theaters. We have a varied repertoire of dances, costumes, and music, and can customize a performance to your requirements, whether you are hosting a family gathering or an experimental underground performance event. We can provide solo or group performances, to live or recorded music. Props such as swords, veils, candles, flowers, baskets, fans, finger cymbals, masks, and other elements can be used.
